Great tips! Living in SD means we have a lot of cold days that we can try them out 😁😁👍
Good tips, thanks.
On another topic, did you not record your Long Trail hike?
Happy Trails
Way to represent EKU! Love it.
Winter camping in Minnesota can be amazingly cold, but beautiful. My tips are 1) stay well feed bc you burn a lot of calories just being outside in the winter, 2) have warm (down) booties for around camp and quick trips out of your tent at night, 3) vent your tent at night! It’s there to keep you out of the elements (wind.& snow), not to retain heat. You don’t want a wet sleeping bag in the morning.
Good tips homie. I will say it’s a bit tougher to get yourself out in the winter when you live up here in Vermont 🙂
I’m new to the YouTube backpacking community and wanted to give a shoutout to you guys. In my latest video I mentioned you.
I’m too paranoid about my filter, so I’m ditching it for some purification tablets or drops for the winter. Not only do hot hands work, but they’re a boost to your mental health!
Great tips Jeremiah. Especially about the water filter and power bank. I do love some hot hands too!! 😁😁
Another tip… bigger winter beard… LOOKIN GOOD, Jer! 🌲🌲🌲👍🌲🌲🌲
(Bell kicked)
If it’s really cold, get yourself a disposable lower back hot pad from a pharmacy. It works the same as hot hands but covers a bigger area. And, you can strap it around your waist and hips to jeep your core warm. They’re about $7 for two.
Hot Hands in the back pockets also works well.
Excellent winter tips! I like the zippo version of your secret weapon – real comfort!
Great tips for winter backpacking. I definitely will try those hot hands. Take Care and Keep Enjoying the Outdoors.
Nice. Thanks for that winter information.
Your correct buddy….the Hot Hands react with air to produce heat so let them heat up for a few minutes before you stuff them in your shoes….if you just put them right in your socks they may not heat up fully.
Notifications are acting funny, I didn’t even see this video.
Thanks for the tips, I haven’t done an overnight in the winter in a minute because the cold turns me into a baby lol. Just day trips, but this might have encouraged me a little bit.
Great tips , but where’s the tie …….
Excellent tips Jeremiah. Like the new channel logo!
Jeremiah, try this with the hot hands. I take my puffy jacket, tie of the end of each sleeve, throw a hand warmer in each sleeve and put a foot in each sleeve. Worked like a champ for me a couple of weeks ago camping near Lexington Ky when it was about 20 -25 degrees at night.
Hot hands in a DIY reflectix food pouch koozie is great for keeping things from freezing.
I Shake up hand warmers and I’ll throw them in my sleeping bag about a half an hour before I go to bed so then when I get in my quilt it’s already warm👍🏼
Thanks for the vid. Go EKU!
Great tips!! Last weekend I did an overnight with Missy from our world outdoors. My fuel canister gelatinized overnight. Luckiyshe had a fuel tab stove and I was able to have some hit coffee. I didn’t know the fuel canister was susceptible to the cold temps as well.
Your usual high energy video. Keep them coming
You don’t know what winter is like. You need to come up here to Northern Minnesota!! You can use a banana to pound tent posts. You can make snow by throwing your boiling water in the air. You can break your frozen shirt that has hung outside. You use moleskin to keep your face from getting frostbite. Here is to add to your tip for your Hot Hands…. take and duct tape Hot Hand to each of your back should bones on shirt, and under your second layer. This will keep your shoulder muscles more flexible, and you will actually feel warmer. It is sold cold up here… if you see two lawyers standing in front of the courthouse… they have their hands in their own pockets.
I call dibs on first comment
put hothands in a buff and just slide over your neck or around your thighs or both at once if you’re extra flexible and open minded
Great tips Jeremiah! One more to go along with your water tip…store the water bottles upside down in your pack. The top surface freezes first, so you won’t have your water trapped below a layer of ice in the bottle.
Preheat your down with a bottle of hot water 30 min before bed time . feels marvelous on cold nights 👍🏻
Man you would be fun to hike with ☺️
Good tips! Most of my backpacking, even in the winter, is in the Sierras. I keep all electronics and filter in my bag at night. I also sleep in something with a hood. Beanies fall off. Another good tip is boil some water and fill up a Nalgene with it and put it in your sleeping bag.
Great vid. Sometimes people of my age group avoid drinking a lot during the winter to avoid frequent wee wee breaks. For women, the PStyle is great- don’t need to drop the drawers and freeze the buns off. Also, Dutch makes a great piece of gear to keep your stuff that needs to keep warm next to your body. The man is a genius
Great tips: my additions Winter gear is heavier Winter backpacking/Backcountry Snowboarding Layer your ground sleep system 1) closed cell foam pad 2) Goretex outer layers 3) insulated air Mattress. Can reverse 1&2 if shelter has no floor and on snow.
OR research makes coozies for nalgenes so bottles won’t freeze place them upside down. Hand warmers are great but can also boil water before you go to bed for a hot drink and fill up nalgene with the boiled water. Cover with your damp day socks and throw in sleeping bag. Eat a high fat snack before bed. Bring a pee bottle. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for sharing.. Good tips.. I don’t do a lot of hiking but when I do it’s good to be prepared.. Hope your week is going well.. Watching and Supporting with Full View Like 91
The best winter sleep I’ve ever had means bringing either a Nalgene bottle or aluminum water bottle (I use aluminum for this now) for a hot water bottle to sleep with. Since most hikers use Smart water bottles now, I think it’s becoming a lost hack. Aluminum is lighter than Nalgene, so it’s my go to for winter warmth now.
The tip you gave me when we were on the FHT works WONDERS! I have even shared it with a few of my other girlfriends! Especially for women, one of our cold spots is in our hips. You told me about zipping my puffy around my hips at night for an extra layer of insulation and it makes ALL the difference!
